The village of Carvalhal

The village of Carvalhal, which was once Carvalhal de Óbidos and with which it has slight similarities, appears referenced as an important place in the region from the 13th century onwards.

This centuries-long historical experience has resulted in the existence of notable monuments and intangible heritage.

The area where it is located, consisting of oak forests and a river with an iron water source, is notable in terms of landscape. From the primary school located at the top of the village, a splendid view of the Serra de Montejunto can be enjoyed.

Its Judeo-Christian roots are embodied in three notable churches:

  • The 15th century Ermida do Socorro, with original architecture and rich tilework;
  • The 18th century Church of the Santissimo Sacramento, with a very interesting interior and sundial;
  • The Sanctuary of Senhor Jesus do Carvalhal, also known as S. Pedro de Finisterra, is located on a wooded hill and has accommodation for pilgrims, concentrating the region's pilgrimages since its reconstruction in the last century.

Within its geographical perimeter, there are three emblematic farms:

  • Quinta da Granja, representative of the permanence of the Cistercian Order;
  • Quinta dos Loridos, together with the Medieval Tower, represents the presence of Italian families in the village for around 200 years, the Lafetat and the Gambini.
  • Quinta do Sanguinhal, representative of the launch of the region's excellent winemaking.

These are some of the many attractions that can be visited in the historic village of Carvalhal, which was once the seat of the municipality and even had a hospital and customs house.

Chapel of Our Lady of Help

Mannerist and Baroque chapel, with a rectangular plan, with a vaulted nave and chancel, a domed galilee, and double arcades. The Mannerist simplicity and severity of the exterior volumes is completely subverted by the rich decoration of the paintings and tiles with Baroque characteristics inside.

The figurative panels were attributed to the partnership of Bartolomeu Antunes-Nicolau de Freitas (Meco, p. 232). Above the triumphal arch, a canvas represents Our Lady of Help. In the altarpiece of the main altar, the 16th-century image of Our Lady of Milk occupies the central niche, above the tabernacle, surrounded by volutes and crowned by a triangular tympanum.

Sanctuary of the Lord Jesus of Carvalhal / Parish Church of Carvalhal / Church of the Lord Jesus and Saint Peter

Religious, eclectic architecture. Pilgrimage church surrounded by all the facilities supporting pilgrims.

It dates back to a primitive chapel dedicated to Saint Peter, the patron saint of the parish since the 14th century.

The current church dates back to the 16th century, the original probably having collapsed in the great earthquake of 1531. From the descriptions given in the death certificates, it can be seen that at the beginning of the 17th century the church already had the features it has today. The parish memoirs of 1758 do not mention any damage caused by the earthquake of 1755, a fact that if it had happened should have been mentioned, since it was one of the questions raised.

In the aforementioned parish memoirs, from 1758, the existence of side altars is mentioned (one of them is already mentioned in 1607, in a death certificate, dedicated to Our Lady of Grace) and the main chapel is already described with the characteristics it has today, namely the fact that the main altar is separate from the tribune, without saints on the bench, with two images flanking the tribune, and in the gap of the tribune the image of the Lord Jesus. This description of the church, as well as the death certificates, and the characteristics of the stonework of the crossing arch and the side altars and the gilded carving of the dressing room of the image of the Lord Jesus, contradict the legend that the church was built in the 19th century.

From the end of the 19th century and beginning of the 20th century, it will be the chapel of Senhor dos Passos, the tribunes of the main chapel, the side arms of the high choir and some decorative elements, such as stucco, tiles and gilded carving.

Carvalhal Tower / Lafetás Tower / Lafeitas Tower
